At the height of the Jewish community's development, no more than 80 Jews lived in the town. It was, however, a municipality that probably from the beginning of its existence, that is from around the second half of its existence. In the 18th century, it had its burial place. From the 1890s, it maintained a synagogue and a teacher. By the end of the 19th century, the number of Jews in Lipiany had fallen to 60, in 1932 to 45, and in the following years, it disappeared.
The Description
The cemetery was established in the forest by the road leading to Żelice. A rectangular plot of 0.25 hectares was selected for it. A wall surrounded it, and the alleys were planted with oak trees. We know that Moses Moser, a banker, philanthropist, and rabbi born into a merchant family in Lipiany, one of the leaders of the Haskalah in Germany and a friend of Heinrich Heine, was buried there in 1838.
The cemetery was used for its purposes until the 1930s. It was devastated in 1935 and deteriorated in the following decades. However, its boundaries have not been blurred. A 40 cm high retaining wall has survived, and a contemporary pole fence has been erected on the outside of the wall.
Only a few tablets have survived on the surface of the necropolis, some with Hebrew and German inscriptions. Gravestone bases and brick and concrete enclosures are also visible, and cemetery debris. Pits dug during the devastation can be seen within the graves.
The old trees growing in the cemetery, especially the oaks marking the former avenue, and the acacias and robinias on the sides, stand out from the forest growing around.
The cemetery is located in an area administered by the State Forests (Myślibórz Forest District) within the commune of Lipiany, between the settlement of Miedzyn and Gajówka Wojciechowo, about 60 m north-west of the road Lipiany-Jarząbki. The site is in no way marked.
