However, not many of their coreligionists followed in their footsteps. At the beginning of the 19th century, only 2–3 Jewish familises lived in Suchań. In 1812, there were 18 Jews among the 660 residents of the town. During this period, the small local community founded its burial place. The cemetery was established on a hill in the eastern part of the town, at Arnswalderstraße (now Leśna Street), south of the old forester's lodge.
Until the mid-19th century, the Jewish community of Suchań was steadily growing. It reached its peak size in the 1860s with 76 people. A synagogue was erected at that time. However, the number of Jews living in the town soon started to dwindle. As a result of emigration to larger cities and abroad, only 20 Jews remained in the town in the 1920s.
The Description
The Jewish cemetery in Suchań was open for funerals until the 1930s. It is believed that during its entire existence, ca. 100 people were buried there. It was destroyed during World War II and continued to deteriorate in the post-war years. Matzevot were disappearing, bushes and trees overgrew the area. In the mid-1990s, there were still a dozen or so tombstones in poor condition at the cemetery. Currently, only a handful of matzevot and fragments of brick-lined graves are visible. Also preserved are fragments of the stone wall once surrounding the cemetery, which makes it possible to retrace its historical boundaries.
In 2019, the cemetery was entered into the register of monuments under Decision no. A-1862 of 9/12/2019. Today, the plot belongs to the State Forests Directorate – Dobrzany Forestry District.
