The Jewish Cemetery

Jewish cemetery Nowe Miasto-Folwark

Address
Nowe Miasto-Folwark

Location
voivodeship mazowieckie, county płoński, commune Nowe Miasto - obszar wiejski

Jews lived in the Nowe Miasto already at the beginning of the 19th century. At that time, they tried to establish their own kahal and build a synagogue, cheder, hospital for the poor and a cemetery. In 1804, the Prussian government allowed the cessation of annual tax payments to the kahal in Nasielsk, which meant the Jewish community in Nowe Miasto became independent. The Hasidim from Góra Kalwaria enjoyed great influence among the local Jews at that time.

After the outbreak of World War II, Nowe Miasto nad Soną found itself under German occupation. Some of the Jews then fled to Radzymin and Warsaw or were displaced. In 1941, the Germans created a ghetto covering the northern and eastern parts of the Market Square as well as Kościelna and Senatorska streets. They resettled Jews from Ciechanów and Drobin there. Conditions in the fenced area were very poor and mortality was high. In 1941, the Germans deported approx. 300 people to the camp in Pomiechówek. The liquidation of the ghetto took place in 1942. The last prisoners were then moved to the ghetto in Płońsk and from there to the German Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The Description

The Jewish cemetery in Nowe Miasto nad Soną is administratively located in Nowe Miasto-Folwark (plot no. 268/3). It is located on the eastern outskirts of the town, on the left side of the road to the village of Zagwizdy, between the road and the Nowomiejski Reservoir. Its boundaries are partially marked: from the southwest - by a small earth embankment, on three sides - by striped shrubs; only from the north-east the border is illegible and the area turns into a meadow. The area of the cemetery thus defined corresponds to the boundaries of plot no. 268/3. The plot has an area of 0.18 ha.

The cemetery of the Jewish community in Nowe Miasto was most likely established in the early 19th century. It was devastated during the German occupation during World War II and in the times of the Polish People's Republic. Approximately 6 field stone matzevas and their fragments have been preserved to this day. One of them contains information about the deceased - Yehuda son of Tzvi (d. 10.04.1848). In 2020, the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage built a fence around the cemetery, and the area was tidied up.
