History
The stone and brick town walls were erected in the 14th century, but the related construction works lasted until 1519. The town was fortified from three sides, while from the Postomia River and Młyński Pond, from the west, it probably remained open. The walls were circumscribed by a moat and there were to gates in them: Młyńska Gate from the north and Ostrowska Gate from the south. They were made of a layer of field stones bound with brick, without additional fortifications. Only in the north-western corner there was a fortified tower built on a round floor plan. In the 18th century, individual sections of the walls remained in ruin. In the period between 19th and 20th 20th century, the walls were dismantled, except for the northern part, where buildings were added on both sides.
Description
The town walls have survived in the form of two small sections - in the north-eastern (Mariańska Street) and north-western (Młynarska Street) section of their original perimeter, with a total length of approx. 200 m. They are approx. 1.5 m in width and from 2 to 4.5 m high. They were built using lime mortar, in some places reinforced with cement mortar at a later time. By Młynarska Street, on the outer side of the walls, there is a former manor house of the Order of Saint John, adjoining the walls with its side façade. Mext to it, there is a brick segment-headed wicket gate.
The site is open to the public.
