The shaft is oval in section, masonry lined and 43 m deep. Its excavation began in 1798. It features an electrically operated elevator that enables tourists to explore a nearly two-kilometer underground route with 18th century galleries, shafts (including Viper and God Bless) and a water gallery. 270 m of the water gallery (Reden Tunnel) is crossed by boats.
